HarbourPilot - recordings of real manoeuvres using Harbour/ChannelPilot

VLCC Berthing on Finger Wharf

Vessel is in the final approaches to the wharf.  In particular note the clearly and continuously updated distances of the bow, stern, shoulder and quarter, to the docking line which extends either side of the finger wharf.

In the instrument panel to the right, the bow and stern speed are also shown, with the length of the vector in the main display representing the speed.  The angle to the wharf is also shown.

Swinging in inner basin in fog

Starts with vessel moving off berth in Docking Mode. Vessel moves ahead into swinging basis to turn through 180 degrees for departure. Note the continuously updated distances off all wharves as the vessel moves.  Note also the bow and stern components of athwartships speed.  Even though pilot has very limited outside visibility due to the fog, he has complete visibility of all clearances around him from the display.

Cape-size Vessel leaving Port Kembla, Australia

This is an extremely tight turn for any ship, let along a Cape Size bulk carrier.  Accurate heading and ROT information give a true prediction of where the vessel is pointing and where it is going to be.

AISPILOT - Recordings taken using AIS as primary source of data

Vessel entering Bell Bay - Tasmania, overview

The vessel transits this river port, using exclusively AIS.  In some places this is adequate so long as the vessels have a good output. AISPilot helps to ensure you can rely on receiving whatever is being transmitted, wirelessly.

Vessel entering Bell Bay - Tasmania, central section

Note the very high ROT reading, giving the prediction around the turn.  Very few vessels have ROT output via AIS.  Without it, the prediction will be along the COG line (thick black line)

Vessel leaving Port Kembla, Australia

Compare this recording with the one under the HarbourPilot heading above.  In this one, the ROT markedly lags, giving a very poor predicted position around this very tight turn for a cape-size bulker
